Winds Across the Water was commissioned by the Michigan City Municipal Band, Michigan City, Indiana, for its 157th season. The ensemble suggested that a water theme might be appropriate based on their performance venue being near Lake Michigan. During my research into the city itself I discovered several pictures of the Michigan City Lighthouse jutting into view against the horizon. The large melodic leaps and expansive sounds of the opening measures are inspired by that view. I also attempted to capture the feeling of standing on the edge of the water, with the wind blowing through my hair. |
