Charlie and the Mechanical Man Marching Band is the first movement from the composer’s larger concert band work, Steampunk Suite. Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that features retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Charlie and the Mechanical Man Marching Band imagines a young Charles Ives winding up his father’s clockwork marching band. It has many moving parts and occasionally gets out of sync as Charlie makes numerous attempts to wind the machine just right. |
