Thanks for checking out this Beyond the Notes composer collaboration! Erika Svanoe and Swan Maiden Press are excited to partner with BTN to showcase our mutual excitement about creating great band experiences for developing musicians, and highlighting the non-profit work of MAX JOY Inc.
Max Roeker was a bright, joyful little boy whose smile, laughter, and boundless curiosity brought warmth to everyone around him. In April of 2023, Max was diagnosed with leukemia, and just one month later, his brave battle ended far too soon. Founded in his name, Max Joy Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to spreading joy to others in need. The "MAX JOY" piece for band also invites student to participate in the "JOY Challenge" created by music educator Chris Gleason. It invites students to follow Max’s example by spreading joy freely and generously — not for recognition, rewards, or credit, but simply to brighten someone else’s day. It is an opportunity to empower your students to notice the people around them, act with kindness, and create small moments of hope in their school community. Additionally, those who wish to honor Max and help fuel this mission can make a contribution through the Max Joy website.
