“Anthem” is defined as “a rousing or uplifting song identified with a particular group, body, or cause” or “a choral composition based on a biblical passage, for singing by a choir in a church service.” Anthem explores its own identity, from religious, patriotic, and social movement perspectives. The initial idea for this piece was to take a hymn melody and develop it gradually until it had the disco feel of social anthems from the 1970s, like Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” or the Village People’s “YMCA.” This idea evolved to encompass the inclusion of four melodies which can all be considered anthems: America the Beautiful, Lift Every Voice and Sing, Amazing Grace, and Ode to Joy. Ultimately, the inclusion and weaving of these melodies throughout the piece is a sincere attempt to joyfully celebrate American diversity. Anthem is not intended to be reflective of an America that is, or an America that was, but rather, a dream of an America that could be. -Erika Svanoe Making purchases directly from this site benefits the composer the most.
